HBCU Initiative

This initiative is designed to elevate the transformative economic, social, educational, and cultural influence of historically Black colleges and universities.

It seeks to build upon what HBCUs already do: invest in leaders of the future and position them to change the world.

By the numbers

$25M

Invested by Strada to partner with HBCUs to amplify and support their leadership development efforts.

49

HBCU partner institutions where students receive scholarships, internship support, and other opportunities.

450+

Strada Scholars selected by their HBCU chancellors and presidents from the pool of students participating in existing campus honors programs.

Why HBCUs matter

Historically Black colleges and universities are important because they provide access to higher education, mainly for students of color, and have been a catalyst for social change. HBCUs have served as a vital source of education for students of color since the early 19th century, and they’ve helped to increase the number of students of color who earn bachelor's degrees, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

In addition to providing a sense of community for students who share a common background, culture, and way of life, HBCUs prepare students to be a part of the professional class and provide economic opportunity in their communities.

How we support HBCUs

Strada works in partnership with the 49 institutions that are part of its HBCU Initiative, helping them continue to offer an affordable option for aspiring college students, provide access to quality coaching, and create opportunities for work-based learning that will help these students build a bridge between education and career.

The Strada Scholars program operates as part of the existing HBCU structure, providing annual scholarships and yearly stipends to offset student costs. Strada Scholars also are part of a nationwide cohort and benefit from mentoring, work-based learning experiences, and peer and professional networking opportunities.
